(Montgomery, AL) – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced a new Computed Tomography (CT) x-ray system for carry-on items at the Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM). The deployment is part of the TSA’s new Checkpoint Property Screening Systems (CPSS) program, which will have the Analogic Corporation deploy over 300 Mid-size CPSS Systems into airport security checkpoints across the country.
MGM received one of eight machines available in other airports statewide. The latest checkpoint X-ray scanning equipment is the new state-of-the-art technology to enhance threat detection capabilities for carry-on baggage. According to TSA, research shows that CT is the most consequential technology available today for airport checkpoints.
“It is great to see the next-generation technology at MGM, which speeds passengers through security even faster while further increasing safety,” said Wade A. Davis, Montgomery Regional Airport Executive Director. “It’s a win-win for the traveling public, and MGM is thankful for the security investment by TSA for the benefit of the regional air traveler.”
Prior to the new machines, MGM used 2-D image screening, and TSA officers were trained to open items of concern and swab them for traces of explosives before allowing the carry-ons to be cleared and loaded onto aircraft. The new CT system applies sophisticated algorithms for detecting explosives, including liquid explosives and other threats, by creating a 3-D image that can be viewed and rotated 360 degrees for a thorough analysis. If a bag requires further screening, TSA officers will be alerted to inspect it to ensure no prohibited items are inside. This technology will limit divesture and increase throughput, all in a touch-free environment.
In addition to the mid-size system features, passengers flying from the Montgomery Regional Airport will be allowed to leave their laptops, other electronics, and 3-1-1 liquids inside the bag during checkpoint screening.
Analogic Corporation expects the new CT screening technology to significantly improve both aviation security as well as the passenger experience.
