Montgomery Regional Airport hosts Inaugural Runway 5K

(Montgomery, AL) – The Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) hosted its inaugural Runway 5K on June 10, 2023. The exciting and unique event provided participants with the opportunity to experience the thrill of running or walking on MGM’s actual airport runway while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of one of Alabama’s premier airports.

The idea behind the Runway 5K was to bring together the local community and aviation enthusiasts in a unique way. Instead of the typical marathon or road race, MGM opened its taxiways for a 5K race. The 5K course offered participants a rare chance to see the airport from a different perspective, as they made their way along the runway with aircraft parked in the background and the control tower providing an impressive backdrop.

“Our first event was a resounding success, exceeding our expectations in terms of participation and community engagement. We had roughly 500 registered runners, ranging from serious athletes to families looking for a fun and active weekend activity,” said Communications and Marketing Manager, Brittney Jones-Dabney. “In addition, we received tremendous support from local businesses and organizations who sponsored the event, helping us cover the logistics and provide an exceptional experience for the participants.”

The run also kicked off the Airport’s giving campaign with the River Region United Way, raising $5,000 through raffle ticket sales.

A special thanks goes to the 5K sponsors and partners: Box Aviation, Eleven86 (water sponsor), Goodwyn Mills Cawood (presenting sponsor), Piedmont Airlines, Valley Bank, HPM, Gather Round Entertainment, MGM Runs Club, Renaissance Montgomery Hotel and Spa, Sip-n-Cycle, WLWI, and WSFA.
