Montgomery, Ala. – Passengers arriving at Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) are now experiencing a more modern and efficient arrival process as the airport officially transitions to its newly renovated baggage claim area. The upgraded space marks a major milestone in the airport’s Momentum terminal improvement program and represents one of the most significant passenger facility enhancements in recent years.
The approximately $5 million project, funded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program (ATP), replaces the airport’s aging baggage claim system with modern infrastructure designed to improve efficiency, reliability, and passenger convenience.
The completed project includes:
- Two new baggage claim carousels, replacing the airport’s previous single-carousel system.
- A dedicated oversized baggage claim area.
- Renovated rental car customer service counters.
- Updated flooring, lighting, finishes, and passenger amenities throughout the arrivals area.
Now fully operational, the new baggage claim significantly improves the airport’s ability to process baggage during periods when multiple aircraft arrive within a short timeframe while providing travelers with a more modern, comfortable, and efficient arrival experience. The investment also positions Montgomery Regional Airport to better accommodate future passenger growth and expanded air service.

Construction remained active while the terminal continued normal airport operations throughout the 18-month project, requiring temporary adjustments to passenger circulation and baggage delivery. Airport staff, airline partners, and contractors worked together to minimize disruptions while maintaining safe and efficient operations during construction.
The baggage claim renovation is one of several improvements taking place under the airport’s Momentum initiative, a long-term effort focused on modernizing facilities, improving operational efficiency, and creating an enhanced travel experience for passengers.

The completion of the baggage claim renovation comes during a period of continued momentum for MGM, including the recent launch of twice-daily nonstop service to Houston and increasing passenger demand throughout the River Region.
To commemorate the completion of the project, Montgomery Regional Airport will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, July 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the airport’s Baggage Claim Zone. Members of the media and community partners are invited to attend.
